Michigan Escapes Fate on a Plate
One steer’s unique hide may save it from someone’s dinner table. The animal is named Michigan, and for a good reason – the brown spot on its side resembles our state’s mitten shape. ![]()
The cattle farm in Saginaw County, Michigan is family-run since 1929, and a hobby for Jacob Kessler, who is owner/president of Kessler Environmental Excavating. All the cattle on the farm are bred and born on the premises and are sold for beef once mature. The Kesslers were willing to sell the steer for promotional or mascot use instead of shipping it to the slaughterhouse. Farm Bureau Insurance bought the steer, aptly named ‘Michigan’. Thanks to the distinct patterns on its hide, “Michigan” has escaped fate on a plate.
